BSc (Hons) Software Engineering, KBU International College, Final year

Country of origin South Africa

My favourite hangout is 1 Utama. It’s a great place to shop, plenty of good food and did I mention great shopping

I love being a college student because it gives me the freedom and independence to make great choices.

I know I made the right decision to study this course because since completing my schooling, I had all my ducks in a row and now I have achieved my childhood dream of following a career with global opportunities – in this case, being a software engineer.

Choosing my course

Software engineering gives me the opportunity to keep my finger on the pulse of technology that is ever-changing. It also provides me with diverse knowledge about how everything on Earth is affected by software, be it the building of a spaceship or the effective distribution of power in a city.

My course

Software engineers build large computer systems that virtually control today’s growing world. It is one of the fastest-growing technological careers. Software engineering touches and affects every facet of our lives.

The best bits about my course

I enjoy software programming the most as it allows my creative side to shine through. I love developing games and programs that challenge young minds.

My challenges

Being an international student away from home for the first time proved to be the greatest challenge. Adapting to the language, education and cultural differences was indeed an experience that led to personal growth.  The support of my brother who is studying in Malaysia, the staff and students, both local and international at KBU, were my pillar of strength. I can truly say that this was indeed a transition from being a dependent individual to a totally independent adult.

Extra-curricular activities

I enjoy watching movies, spending time with my friends and travelling. When I have time to spare, I work on my passion – modelling.

Looking ahead

My immediate plan is to go back home to South Africa and be spoilt by my mum.  I would eventually like to pursue my Master’s degree in software engineering before I start my career. I would ultimately love to expand into the legal field of software engineering.

My advice

Always follow your heart and instinct in whatever you want to do in life; this includes choosing a career. Always do the best in anything you attempt.
